
Andrew John Kim
Andrew John Kim is concert and film composer from New York City. He is currently pursuing his Master's degree in Film Scoring at New York University studying with David Spear. He recently graduated from Northwestern University Bienen School of Music with a degree in Music Composition and minors in Sound Design and Commercial Music. He has studied composition with Jay Alan Yim, Hans Thomalla, and Lee Hyla at Northwestern and Ira Newborn at NYU.
Andrew has composed concert works for various chamber ensembles, choir, solo piano, orchestra, and wind ensemble. A number of these works have been performed or read by members of the Hartford Symphony, members of the Connecticut Opera, Triton Brass Quintet, Northwestern University Chamber Orchestra, Northwestern University Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Northwestern University Contemporary Music Ensemble and Hillcrest Wind Ensemble. For film, Andrew has composed music for a variety of film genres including documentary, comedy, drama, and horror. The films he has worked on have been awarded grants from Northwestern's Studio 22, NUWFA, and Zach Braff. Also, he has edited the sound for several films.

During the fall semester, Andrew re-scored an NYU Tisch film "Aethiopicus" for his NYU recording session of the semester. In January, he re-recorded it with few NYU musicians and mixed them with sampled instruments. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ad3fx16lLhg
"Immortals" is a trailer music-esque track that combines live instruments with orchestral and percussive samples.

Andrew finished scoring and recording music to "Khat: A Cultural Addiction", a documentary about the use of the drug, Khat, in Ethiopia. It was directed by Sarah Springer, an NYU Journalism student.

During the Aspen Music Festival Film Scoring Program, Andrew re-scored the opening scenes to the film, Ghost Rider (2007). It was recorded by the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen Orchestra (AACA) and mixed by Thomas Haines at a near by studio, Great Divide Studios.

Andrew's senior recital will be on June 6th at 8:30 pm in Lutkin Hall. His recital will feature pieces for solo piano, solo guitar, solo flute, a small choir, and two violins.

Andrew will be composing the music for three student films (A Heart Felt, The Mortician, Red Daisy). He will also be doing sound design work for Still Fisher. All films will be premiered in early June of 2011.
